Civil Engineering: Standards

What is a standard?

"In essence, a standard is an agreed way of doing something. It could be about making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials – standards can cover a huge range of activities undertaken by organizations and used by their customers...Standards cover a wide range of subjects from construction to nanotechnology, from energy management to health and safety, from cricket balls to goalposts." BSI

Standards - "Think of them as a formula that describes the best way of doing something.

It could be about making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials – standards cover a huge range of activities. Standards are the distilled wisdom of people with expertise in their subject matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent – people such as manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade associations, users or regulators." ISO

Acquiring standards at Stellenbosch University

The best way to enquire about a standard that you need for your research, is to send an email to your librarian at the Engineering and Forestry Library.

South African Bureau of Standards

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) maintains a database of 6 500 national standards, and as part of its mandate, it develops new standards, reviews and amends existing standards, and withdraws existing standards as needed. The  Engineering and Forestry Library has access to this collection of national standards, but only up to 2016. Any standard that was updated or added since then, needs to be purchased.

Please contact the library by email to enquire about any of these standards.
