Die Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT) is ’n omvattende sinchroniese verklarende woordeboek, d.w.s. primêr gerig op die huidige taalgebruik. So ’n woordeboek moet op ’n omvattende manier verslag doen van die woordeskat van Afrikaans. Die omvattendheid van die WAT lê op drie vlakke: die opname van die Afrikaanse woordeskat in sy wydste omvang, die groot verskeidenheid tipes inligting wat in die bewerking aangebied word asook die omvang van die bewerking.
