Makerspace Policies and Rules

The Makerspace may be accessed and used free of charge by all current Stellenbosch University students and staff. Please note that fees are payable for 3D printing. By entering the Makerspace and using its facilities, you accept to abide by the space’s policies and rules. By not following Makerspace policies and rules you will be requested to leave the Makerspace. Further transgressions will result in you being banned from the space.

  1. Food and beverages are not allowed, except for water in spill-proof containers.
  2. No tools, equipment, or other resources may leave the Makerspace.
  3. Do not run or engage in reckless behaviour in the Makerspace.
  4. Makerspace users must immediately report any accident/incident within the space to a Makerspace staff member.
  5. Adhere to any other instructions or rules given by Library staff. Report any violation to the Head: Makerspace or Manager: Learning and Training via our feedback form.

  7. Using construction- and design workstations, tools, equipment, and 3D printing and scanning services
     
    1. Construction- and design workstations are available for bookings by SU students and staff. By agreeing to the terms and conditions to use the workstations, equipment, and software you have selected on the booking form, you confirm that you will use it in a manner that is safe and consistent with its intended purpose. Clients are responsible for keeping workstations and equipment neat and tidy, and to switch off equipment after use.

    1. Tools and equipment are available for check out at the staff desk in the Makerspace. Only use equipment, tools, or facilities after you have received safety instructions or rules, and have been trained on its use by Makerspace staff. Clients who wish to utilise equipment and hand tools must do so for lawful purposes. Always use the right personal protective equipment for the job. Safety glasses must be always worn for all hand tools and soldering. Use safety gloves when handling materials such as wood, glass or metal. Abide by all applicable policies and regulations of Stellenbosch University.

    1. 3D printing and 3D scanning is done by Makerspace staff. Makerspace clients are not allowed to interact directly with the 3D printers and 3D scanner. All users of the 3D printers, 3D scanners and other equipment must abide by copyright laws. For more information, please consult the Library's copyright guide. The Makerspace staff reserves the right to deny any print request for any reasons.
  1. Makerspace users should note that the Stellenbosch University Library Makerspace will NOT be held liable for:
  • damage to a user’s hard drive, disk, computer, any other personal equipment or any projects/objects a user makes;
  • personal injuries in the Makerspace;
  • any loss of data or information that may occur during the use of the Makerspace; or,
  • loss of any saved projects on the Makerspace computers. All projects on a Makerspace computer hard drive will be automatically deleted after that user’s session has ended. Users are strongly encouraged to save any projects on their own external hard drive or cloud alternatives such as OneDrive.

Toegang tot en gebruik van die Innovasieruimte is gratis vir alle huidige studente en personeel van die Universiteit Stellenbosch. Let egter daarop dat fooie vir 3D-drukwerk betaalbaar is. Deur die Innovasieruimte binne te gaan en van die geriewe gebruik te maak, onderneem jy om die ruimte se beleid en reëls na te kom. As die Innovasieruimte se beleid en reëls oortree word, sal jy gevra word om die Innovasieruimte te verlaat. Verdere oortredings sal daartoe lei dat jy die ruimte belet word.

  1. Geen voedsel en drank word toegelaat nie, buiten vir water in morsvrye houers.
  2. Geen gereedskap, toerusting of ander hulpbronne mag uit die Innovasieruimte verwyder word nie.
  3. Moenie in die Innovasieruimte hardloop of roekeloos optree nie.
  4. Innovasieruimte-gebruikers moet enige ongeluk/voorval in die ruimte onmiddellik by ʼn Innovasieruimte-personeellid aanmeld.
  5. Kom alle ander instruksies of reëls wat deur die biblioteekpersoneel gegee word, na. Meld enige oortreding op ons terugvoervorm by die Hoof: Innovasieruimte, of die Bestuurder: Leer en Opleiding aan.
  6. Vir enige algemene vrae of navrae oor die Innovasieruimte, maak asseblief ʼn aanlyn afspraak hier.
  7. Die gebruik van konstruksie- en ontwerpwerkstasies, gereedskap, toerusting, en 3D-drukwerk- en skandeerdienste
     
    1. Konstruksie- en ontwerpwerkstasies kan deur US-studente en -personeel bespreek word. Deur aanvaarding van die bepalings en voorwaardes vir die gebruik van die werkstasies, toerusting en programmatuur wat jy op die besprekingsvorm kies, bevestig jy dat jy dit veilig en in ooreenstemming met die beoogde doel daarvan sal gebruik. Kliënte is daarvoor verantwoordelik om werkstasies en toerusting netjies en skoon te hou, en om toerusting ná gebruik af te skakel.

    1. Gereedskap en toerusting kan by die personeeltoonbank in die Innovasieruimte uitgeneem word. Gebruik slegs toerusting, gereedskap en geriewe nadat jy veiligheidsinstruksies of reëls ontvang het, en deur Innovasieruimte-personeel in die gebruik daarvan opgelei is. Kliënte wat toerusting en handgereedskap wil gebruik, mag dit slegs vir wettige doeleindes gebruik. Gebruik altyd die regte persoonlike beskermende toerusting vir die werk. ʼn Veiligheidsbril moet vir alle werk met handgereedskap en soldeerwerk gedra word. Dra veiligheidshandskoene wanneer materiaal soos hout, glas of metaal gehanteer word. Kom al die toepaslike beleide en regulasies van die Universiteit Stellenbosch na.

    1. 3D-drukwerk en 3D-skandering word deur die Innovasieruimte-personeel gedoen. Innovasieruimte-kliënte mag nie self die 3D-drukkers en 3D-skandeerder gebruik nie. Alle gebruikers van die 3D-drukkers, 3D-skandeerders en ander toerusting moet die kopieregwette nakom. Vir meer inligting, raadpleeg asseblief die biblioteek se kopiereggids. Die Innovasieruimte-personeel behou die reg voor om enige versoek om drukwerk om enige rede af te wys.
  1. Innovasieruimte-gebruikers moet daarop let dat die Universiteit Stellenbosch Biblioteek se Innovasieruimte NIE aanspreeklik sal wees vir:
  • skade aan ʼn gebruiker se hardeskyf, skyf, rekenaar, enige ander persoonlike toerusting of enige projekte/voorwerpe wat deur ʼn gebruiker gemaak word nie;
  • persoonlike beserings in die Innovasieruimte nie;
  • enige verlies aan data of inligting wat tydens die gebruik van die Innovasieruimte mag voorkom nie; of
  • verlies van enige gestoorde projekte op die Innovasieruimte-rekenaars nie. Alle projekte op die hardeskyf van ʼn Innovasieruimte-rekenaar sal outomaties uitgewis word nadat die gebruikersessie verby is. Gebruikers word sterk aangemoedig om enige projekte op hulle eie eksterne hardeskyf of wolk-alternatiewe, soos OneDrive, te stoor.
